TUTORIAL: A Professional Storyboard for 3D and 2D

                                    P R E M I S E
The Storyboard is the first definition of the project which working. The Storyboard is very
important in all 2D and 3D programs and so in Lightwave ©, Photoshop ©, Fractal Painter ©,
and so on. The Storyboard is used as integral part of the project. A Storyboard is a Preview
of the graphic job to realize. It consists of hand-made Sketches of the various parts of the
graphic project to build and of comments and measuraments, that it is necessary hold in due
consideration in the carring out of the Final Project. In a few words it's a synthetic map of
Your Project. It is very important, to write a good Storyboard, have some sheets of paper
already adequately preset, on what, nearby to the space for the sketches, must be present
also a space for the comments concerning the elements to which the sketch refers. Obviously
in the Storyboard it is not compulsory drawing all the particulars, but only the ones really
important. On the basis of my substantial experience as Digital Artist, as Designer, as 3D
Modeller and as Teacher of these branches, I have created a Basic Form of Storyboard, that I
think particularly suitable to draw up a Professional Storyboard and to allow to have always
well clear in the mind the aims of the Graphic Project on which you are working and to be
able to state it also to other people without any misunderstanding. I have decided to make
available, free, but only for your personal and not commercial use, this my Basic Form of
Storyboard. You can Download the File storyben.zip that contains the file .PDF of my Basic
Form of Professional Storyboard. Let we see now as it is formed this Form, that can be used
and printed withouth any distinction either with Pc or with MacIntosh © computers.
Click with mouse on small picture near the words and you can see them more large.
                                 P R O C E D U R E
On right you can see the basic model of Storyboard I've
created, in a simple but efficient way. Nearby to the
space for the Sketches, there is too a space for the
comments or the suggestions of the element which the
splash refers. Let we see in detail this my model of
Storyboard. It is of 3 Main Sections.

On Top of the Sheet of Storyboard, there is its First
Section, the one to Identify the whole Storyboard. So
there are the Spaces for the Title of the Work to
realize, for the Name of the Author, for the 3D or 2D
kind of Graphic to apply, for the Date of carrying out
and finally for the Page Number of the Storyboard. In
fact it is necessary remember that really a Professional
Storyboard is composed from several pages.
Above on left, and from up to down, there are 3 Blank
Squares where you must draw the Sketches of the incoming
work. In the First Top Left Square you must draw the
Sketch of the Whole Project, that is the Final Sketch.
In the other squares, under the first, always on left,
you must draw all the single parts or the important
details of the project. When you will have filled with
your sketches all the squares on left of the first sheet
of the Storyboard, you can continue on another sheet of
Storyboard, and so on, until you will have drawn all the
needed Sketches of your Whole Project.

Above on right, and always from up to down, there are 3
others Blank Squares, this time with some black lines
inside, where you must write the Notes and the Comments
regarding the related Sketches on left side. Therefore
in the First Top Right Square you must write the Notes
and the Comments on the Sketch of the Whole Project,
that is the Final Sketch. In the other squares, under
the first, always on the right, you must write the notes
and comments about the sketches of the single parts and
of the important details of the project. So quickly the
whole Project will be fixed in a clear way, both in your
mind and on the sheets of your Storyboard. This is
really the best way to execute your 3D or 2D Work.

As I think that a practical example is more useful than a thousand of written words, here are
first 5 images of Storyboards about 2D Graphic Projects, made from my students at Course of
2D Virtual Design with Fractal Painter ©, at the Fine Arts Academy of L'Aquila. After these
first 5 images, you will find other 5 images of Storyboards about 3D Graphic Projects, this
time made from my students at Course of 3D Graphic Modeling with Lightwave 3D ©, always at
the Fine Arts Academy of L'Aquila. Click with mouse on small pictures to see them more large.
Don't forget that you can Download the File storyben.zip that contains the file .PDF of my
Basic Form of a Professional Storyboard.
